Why the hell did Honda render my foot brake useless when the engine is off?

I'm a new driver so i'm not sure if this is a Honda thing or a new cars in general but regards I fail to understand its purpose.Story time:I was driving in the hills and I came to a long steep slope with a round about at the top, great fun for manual drivers like myself but I was okay.Unfortunately the driver in front of me could drive a manual but had never been taught how to do a hill start and every time he tried to move off, he moved closer to me.I got out of my car and decided to give a crash course to this poor guy but first I went back to my car to move it back. The key was in the ignition turned all the way but as Honda loves their start buttons the engine wasn't on. I released the parking break and tried to apply the foot brake.... nothing.I quickly ripped the handbrake and I was okay but to this day I don't understand why it doesn't work. I understand the engine assists braking but the pedal was completely immovable and I have strong legs.I just makes me wonder if I had one of those non reflex friendly electronic switches for a handbrake what could of happened that day. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2uKLwJ3
