Is the era of the shadetree mechanic about to end?

With Volvo announcing they are going all electric/hybrid, and with the generally increasing importance of electronics in modern cars, will any of us be able to work on our cars in our garages in the (relatively near) future? What is the impact on future maintenance costs? Will cars be considered totaled at much higher values? (I'm guessing it would be unlikely most home mechanics would want to buy a an old, cheap hybrid car, because it would be very difficult to keep running - greater danger of fire/electrocution, higher cost to replace components and batteries, more systems to troubleshoot, etc.).Even something like Lemons is dependent on the ability of amateur mechanics to troubleshoot mechanical issues. Does the challenge simply move to programming and electrical troubleshooting, or does something like Lemons go away altogether? Are we approaching the end of an era? via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2uPuwk3
