How can I drive more fuel efficiently?

OK so a little context, I live in England, drive a Peugeot 206, '07 plate 1.4 petrol manual. Petrol costs £1.20 a litre, and I drive to London and back once a week, about 260 miles round trip. Sometimes I drive at 60ish to save fuel, but my main question is about fuel efficient gear changes. If I'm say going 25, and I want to get to 50, am I better off gently accelerating in 3rd gear, or going in 4th and then having to floor it? I know general advice is to change gears at low revs, but if I need go get to 50 in a timely manner am I using more petrol flooring it in 4th? Is the amount of fuel being used how far down I have the peddle? Or how high my revs are whilst the peddle is down? Sorry if this is a boring question! Also any other easy tips would be great! Thanks! via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2s2xqjB
