PSA: Don't let AWD make you over confident. It doesn't help you stop any faster when you lose control

I know most of you guys know this, but I'm putting this out there again because it might help save someone's life. I was driving on a twistie road through the mountains in very heavy rain this morning for my commute. I was in the right lane and the right side was covered in deep rain. I immediately slowed down and went into the right lane (don't worry I didn't cut anyone off). This side continued to be covered in water so I stayed to the left. about 1000 feet later there was a bit of a backup. There was a presumably brand new BMW 540i with X drive that lost control and was at the side of the road. He may have felt more connected to the road than I did with AWD which put him in more danger. If you're going faster you are at a much greater risk of hydroplaning. Once you hydroplane your brakes aren't going to do anything.I know all kinds of people drive BMWs, but it does seem to be the official car of those who are overconfident and unaware of defensive driving. I love driving, and I love driving fast, but we all need to be careful and mindful of road conditions and other drivers who have different driving styles. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2tqCySJ
