Miata's are expensive now.

I've noticed the price of Mazda Miatas going up. The only reason they were popular in the first place is because they were fun on a cheap budget. A few years ago you could find them on Craigslist for $500 all day. Now the average Miata is around $4000-$5000.So my question is what's the next car that will take the cheap fun slot and what slot is the Miata really in these days? Because of the inflation of Miata's you are now in a range where you can buy much better cars, like the BMW Z3, Z4, Audi TT, Toyota MR-2 to name a few.
