Magnesium vs Carbon Fiber

Was watching a video about the latest GT2 RS and how it will include a Weissach package with lighter wheels, titanium roll cage, and more specifically a carbon fiber roof. This piqued my interest because in this interview with Andreas Preuninger he speaks about how they developed a new fabrication process where they had the GT3 RS's roof made out of magnesium and how this is great because it's lighter than carbon fiber. This makes me wonder what the roof of the standard GT2 RS is made of and why they didn't opt to go for magnesium? Any materials science or structural engineers or anyone from the auto industry care to elaborate? Was it done for rigidity, safety, costs? via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2sfkTdl
