Is it easier to import a car into the US if it has a US equivalent?

So i found a JDM 1991 Misubishi GTO listed online, and I was wondering how difficult it would be to import into the US (specifically California). I know it would have to pass smog, but its virtually identical to the Mitsubishi 3000GT, so I don't think that would be too much of an issue. Any thoughts? via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2tu6M5l
