How does one go about getting a job in the automotive industry without a degree?

Sorry if this isn't the right place to post, but /r/jobs is much more ambiguous and I'm looking specifically at the car industry.I'm going to my first year of university for something completely different but I have a passion for cars that I would love to further explore through work. If anyone's in a similar boat to me or has been in the past, how did you manage to get started?
