Fabric battery cover being eaten by mice

Is the fabric cover over the battery necessary? I am thinking about just removing it if it is not. Mice have been picking away the cover little by little. I tried to do some research to see what the fabric cover does and it seems like it is partially aesthetic but also serves some small functions. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2uJSQVg
