Can a rear car window spontaneously shatter?

So I got in my car today and closed the door, I heard a cracking sound and didnt know what it was so I got out and closed the door again to go investigate, this time the entire rear window of my car shattered into a million pieces in my back seat. How could this happen? Do windows often just spontaneously shatter like this? There were no signs of damage earlier that day when i drove it and no debris around my car that could have done it. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2tHX3IL
