Hi there! I had a quick question regarding a diagnosis I recently received on my 2008 Ford Focus.I've kept up with usual maintenance since I first purchased the car about 7 years ago at ~24k miles. It's currently about to hit ~100k miles, and so far thankfully hasn't given me any issues. However, a few months ago the "Check Engine" light turned on, and I finally got around to taking it in to get the code read. In the mean time, I'd noticed two symptoms beginning to appear: I was having to replace brake fluid more often than usual, and applying the brakes while driving on the highway (60mph+) would cause the steering wheel to shudder slightly. My mechanic came back with the diagnosis that my "ABS Hydraulic Control" module is failing, and quoted me at ~$500 for an aftermarket part (Ford has discontinued their own line of parts), and roughly ~$300 for labor (about $800 all together). I tried to look this up online, but this part is very hard to find any information or quotes on, as is the diagnosis/issue. For reference, my mechanic is generally very honest and has even turned us away from paying them for repairs or work we thought were necessary but actually weren't. So, I don't suspect them to be trying to extort me.While their diagnosis seems in line with the symptoms I've noticed, I'm curious to know whether anyone has experienced a similar issue with their Ford Focus (or other car), and if this quote seems appropriate. I'm hesitant to sink money into the car since the KBB value is only ~$2500 and I don't drive it much (not at all since taking it in to get the code read). I'm also nervous about sinking money into the car since it's only going to continue to depreciate, and I've heard bad things about longevity past 100k miles on Fords.Any thoughts on whether this diagnosis is relatively common, whether this is a reasonable quote or whether it's even worth sinking money into at this point in the car's life cycle? If I can get another 50-100k miles out of the car, I might consider making the investment, however I'm really having a hard time telling if it's worth it at this point. I mostly commute via public transit and would rather invest that money on maintenance and upkeep on my girlfriend's 2006 Corolla (which we have been using as our primary non-work transport) as I'm under the impression that is likely to last much longer with fewer issues. Thanks so much!! via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2tJkHHq
