What cars caused the major push towards turbocharging in modern vehicles?

We all know it's very easy to find factory turbocharged production cars now, whether they are performance-oriented or not. I'm not really asking what were the first turbocharged production vehicles, but I'm asking more about which vehicles were extremely influential in making it such a popular thing? Which vehicles had big successes (or even failures) that affected the trend? I would think the Buick Turbo Regal/T-type/GN/GNX would be a major player here, as would a lot of Porsches.
