Rotary weekend car?

I'm looking at buying a project/weekend car to work on and maintain and the Mazda rx8 comes to mindI can get them pretty cheap (2-3k), they look nice and the inside is beautifulMy only gripe is the rotary maintenance, which I have never done before. Since it's a weekend car, I'm ok with the lower mpg and oil consumptionMy question is would the maintenance of the rotary engine be too expensive for me, a student? I've heard of rotaries lasting 300k+ miles but of some lasting less than 100k via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2s3HaPg
