Planning a trip, what are your suggestions for preparing my vehicle?

I'm looking at driving from Western washington to middle tennesse this december. I will be using my 92 nissan truck. Other then going to a mechanic for a pre-trip inspection, is there anything else I should do to prepare? I have hotels along the way planned out about every 10 hours. Also, I will be bringing an about 5 month old german shepherd with me.l, so anyone experienced in traveling with a young dog, any advice? via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2sVZNnF
