Need helping convincing parents to let go of the mini van

Currently I am driving the hand-me-down 2003 Honda Odyssey and at 214k miles it is getting worn and needs some pricey repairs/expenses done to it before winter. It needs a timing belt and water pump soon, front passenger tie rod, and the A/C does not work (don't need that fixed though). We just spent $900 fixing a coolant leak and the future expenses mentioned above will total nearly $2000.It has minor rust, dents, and scratches from the years of being a family vehicle in the rust belt. My father is having issues with letting me either sell or scrap it and use that money towards a slightly less shittier car.I know we can get $600 from a junkyard and at least $1200 from selling it. On top of mentioning the future expenses and the fact that I do not need a large mini van at this point in my life, what else can I mention? I have also already indicated my absolute love for cars and how crushing it is driving a mini van, nothing seems to work. His main counter argument has been that we know the full history of it and a used vehicle is always a risk.Any help is appreciated. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2s3y5q1
