I have been toying with the idea of setting up a small engine tuning shop at home. The idea is I would buy small popular engines like some Honda US/JDM, Subaru, Toyota, maybe even older Mercedes 6-cylinders, all used, refurbish/repair and install modest aftermarket internals such as pistons, valves, cams...maybe do some mild machining where necessary, then sell them on a small scale. This would be more of a hobby for me but I think I could support the hobby by selling the engines. The market I'm aiming for is the mod market where people are doing pretty heavy modding but are limited to bolt-ons. Right now your options are to buy a professionally built race motor which costs $5000-25000, get a local shop to do it which can be crazy expensive when factoring in the labor, or try and DIY it which, if you don't have the proper tools is risky. My engines can be had for a few thousand on top of whatever core deposit you give me and then you're only tasked with putting the engine back in which is relatively simple. Shipping looks reasonable if I start local. Right now I see a great Honda B18B2 for $300. I could easily clean it up, put in forged pistons for $500, a set of cams $500, values $300, and maybe another $300 in head bolts and gaskets. All the labor is essentially free because I'm doing it as a hobby at home. So lets say $3000 for a ready to drop in performance B18B2 minus whatever engine you give me in return. Eventually I could support custom orders and more complicated engines as I collect the proper tool sets. Also, this will allow me to live out a small portion of one my Iron Man fantasies: Rocking out to good music while I tinker with mechanics on my own time in my own shop...so it'll be my living room but close enough! Tl;dr I wanna refurb used engines with performance parts and sell them...would you buy one? via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2symJsy
