Is my car's audio system compatible with newer dashboards?

I have a 2006 VW Golf which came with a built-in audio system and a pluggable dashboard. Obviously that dashboard doesn't support anything like Bluetooth or USB connection. I was wondering, are dashboards interchangeable or do I need to change my entire audio system? If they are, do I just but a new one that satisfies my needs?
