PSA: if you have aftermarket wheels with aftermarket lug nuts, make sure they are compatible with your spare tire/factory tool kit (Backstory)

Here was a fun experience that I had this morning.A friend of mine calls me from ~30 miles away saying that he had a flat tire and was unable to change out his tire on the side of the road.Being a fellow car guy I was stumped, poking fun immediately ensued "you're a car guy and you don't know how to change your tire out?" I sarcastically said over the phone. The response was candid and completely understandable, "my aftermarket wheels have a different size wheel key and use a different style lug bolt than my factory ones" I immediately knew the problem. You see, his Volkswagen GTI uses Ball seat lug bolts on the factory wheels, so when he changed out for his BBS wheels and sold the factory ones he gave the factory lug bolts away with the wheels, the BBS wheels use a cone style seat, Picture or referenceLucky for him I had 5 Ball seat stock VW lug bolts sitting in my garage, and felt so inclined to drive out to him with my breaker bar and 17mm socket.PSA for all of you guys who run aftermarket wheels, make sure the lug bolts/nuts are compatible with your spare, and that you have a breaker bar and compatible socket kept in your car just in case you encounter such an occasion. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2rQNuVH
