Is my truck actually overheating, or do I maybe just have a bad gauge?

Hey guys, never been here before but hoping I can get some very general advice. I know I'm not going to get THE answer, just looking for some guidance on where to start here. Any help is greatly appreciated. It's summer here in AZ which means it's very hot. My 2005 Ford F-150 with 190K is not enjoying the heat. A few days ago, on my way home from work, the engine temperature gauge started red lining and the car started beeping at me with a great fury.I pulled over, checked the radiator overflow, and it was low. Managed to get myself home, got some fluid, filled it back up. Ride back to work the next day was fine, but then on the way home again, same thing. Red lining. There are some things that make me think that it's actually the gauge or thermometer itself and not the engine actually overheating.• No signs of leakage from the overflow. Obviously something is probably going on since it was low in the first place, but I can't find any evidence that I'm losing any fluid at this point.• No steam. The car doesn't drive any differently when it starts to redline. I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary besides the gauge showing that the engine is overheating.• The temperature increase is very rapid. On my way home from work, I'll be driving for 20 minutes. The the needle will start to creep up from the center and be redlining within about a minute. Sometimes the needle will bob down, then back up very rapidly. Much more rapidly than I imagine the temp is actually changing in the engine.• When the temp gauge does redline, I'll pull over and shut the car off for only about a minute, and as soon as I start the truck back up, the gauge will be reading normal temperature again. Which to me, seems like much too fast for the engine to cool down from a very high temperature all the way down to a normal temp. Thanks in advance for any help, happy to provide any additional info I can. via /r/cars http://ift.tt/2t0xqEi
