Changed gears without clutch

I was sitting in my driveway after I got home, pulled the handbrake, put it in 1st, and turned the car off. I took my feet off the brake and clutch, and sat there for a second. When procrastinating getting out, I sometimes put my foot on the clutch and go through the gears ¯\(ツ)_/¯).I started to do that this time, but without thinking, I did it without the clutch, and I could go through every gear. I turned the car on and it seemed to not work, but I didn't try too hard because I didn't want to break anything. I turned the car back off, and it worked again. How did this happen?
